The Most Important Machine in the Company

What's the point of winning if you can't enjoy it?

By Jay Altman · September 28, 2026

Entrepreneurs track everything inside their businesses. Revenue. Margins. Leads. Conversion rates. Retention. Cash flow.

But the most important machine in the company usually gets almost no instrumentation.

The founder.

I've spent years studying fitness, functional medicine, recovery, nutrition, cardiovascular performance, metabolic health, sleep and longevity. Not because I'm trying to live forever. Because I want to perform well now — and remain capable for a very long time.

The operating principles

Track what matters. Improve what can be improved. Use science. Ignore bullshit. Keep moving.

Building extraordinary wealth while destroying the person building it is a terrible trade. Healthspan matters more than lifespan alone.

Key takeaways

  • —You are an asset that never appears on the balance sheet.
  • —Instrument the founder the way you instrument the business.
  • —Optimize for healthspan — performing now and staying capable later.
